"I know my determination and craving for knowledge will get me those scrubs."
People constantly ask me “why do you commute over here every day?”, in all honesty some days I don’t even know how I manage to wake up at 6am and drive an hour every day just to come to school. Yet, there's no other place I’d rather be. I have grown up with the same people since attending EPACS. I have built strong bonds with teachers and other staff and this place really seems like a second home. I know that if I would’ve gone to a high school in the East Bay, I wouldn’t be able to be where I am right now. I would definitely not think about going to college and certainly not work as hard as I am working now. College is something I never thought about until my teachers here at EPAPA started talking wonders about it. College became cool. My family, like a lot of families in the East Palo Alto area, had to move due to the increase in rent costs.
Since I take two buses and a train from school to Oakland, I often have time (when I'm not working on my essays for college or homework) to think about why I do this. My motivation stems from wanting to break the cycle of the hardships that my family has had to endure. From a young age, I learned that when someone wants something, they work hard. Every time I felt like giving up on my future my father would always look me in the eyes and say the same thing in Spanish “el que quiere puede” meaning whoever wants something badly enough, will make things happen at any cost and in any circumstance. I want to be a successful doctor badly, so I commute to a school that is an hour away every single day, take two buses and a train to get home.
Isabel hopes to get into a UC, attend medical school, and has the goal of becoming a doctor in the ICU. She will be graduating in the Spring of 2016 from EPAPA.
