Having goals is essential to accomplishing dreams. Goals are like small stepping  stones that slowly merge to  develop a path that will get  you to your dreams; every  time you reach a specific  goal, the distance to achieve  your dream is cut shorter  and shorter. My dream is to  attend a four-year university  and graduate as a  mechanical engineer. In order to achieve my dream and fulfill my potential, I had to establish goals that would guide me, in the words of DJ Khaled, onto the path of success. In order to achieve my dream of attending a four-year university and becoming a mechanical engineer, I know that I have to be as competitive as possible; my goal is to have the best grades possible, which would in turn allow me to be valedictorian of the class of 2017; by doing so, I would be able to reassure universities that I was indeed the best candidate for their school.
If it wasn’t for the wonderful staff at EPAPA, I don’t think that I would be on the right path to achieving my goal of becoming Valedictorian of the Class of 2017. EPAPA has really helped me grow in every aspect that defines who I am. To begin with, EPAPA’s small student population allows teachers and students to build relationships that will last beyond college. Through these relationships, students are able to develop a plan of action that will allow them to reach their goals. In my case, my advisor has been my go-to person whenever I need help. My advisor has helped me get through it all; whether it is giving me personal life advice, helping me with school problems, or just simply hearing me rant about things that are on my mind, my advisor has always been there for me since day one.
Apart from “supplying” me with a go-to person, EPAPA has also helped me develop a better understanding of the world. I still remember the first day when I walked into Social Justice class. I was not sure what to expect; as a matter of fact, I was not even 100% sure what the words “social justice” meant. Little did I know, I was getting into a class that would change the way I would view the world. Social justice enabled me to see the flaws in the world and society that many fail to notice. Through these new lenses, my knowledge and perspective on things changed, which in return enabled me to become more conscious about the things I see in the world.
It has been an honor to have been apart of the EPAPA family for the past 2 and a half years and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for me next year as a senior.

"I know my determination and craving for knowledge will get me those scrubs."

People constantly ask me “why do you commute over here every day?”, in all honesty some days I don’t even know how I manage to wake up at 6am and drive an hour every day just to come to school. Yet, there's no other place I’d rather be. I have grown up with the same people since attending EPACS. I have built strong bonds with teachers and other staff and this place really seems like a second home. I know that if I would’ve gone to a high school in the East Bay, I wouldn’t be able to be where I am right now. I would definitely not think about going to college and certainly not work as hard as I am working now. College is something I never thought about until my teachers here at EPAPA started talking wonders about it. College became cool. My family, like a lot of families in the East Palo Alto area, had to move due to the increase in rent costs.

Since I take two buses and a train from school to Oakland, I often have time (when I'm not working on my essays for college or homework) to think about why I do this. My motivation stems from wanting to break the cycle of the hardships that my family has had to endure. From a young age, I learned that when someone wants something, they work hard. Every time I felt like giving up on my future my father would always look me in the eyes and say the same thing in Spanish “el que quiere puede” meaning whoever wants something badly enough, will make things happen at any cost and in any circumstance. I want to be a successful doctor badly, so I commute to a school that is an hour away every single day, take two buses and a train to get home.

Isabel hopes to get into a UC, attend medical school, and has the goal of becoming a doctor in the ICU. She will be graduating in the Spring of 2016 from EPAPA.
