Literacy Intervention Initiative

East Palo Alto Charter School and East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy are working hard to ensure students are reading proficiently and graduating college ready. Currently, 60% of EPACS students and 56% of EPAPA students are on or above grade level reading. However, we still have students that are struggling and need intervention. We know this is critical to address as nationally 1 in every 6 children who are not reading proficiently by the third grade drop out of high school and, consequently, do not attend college.
Problem Statement: National statistics state that 1 in every 6 children who are not reading proficiently by the third grade end up dropping out of high school, and consequently do not attend college. 40% of EPACS and EPAPA students are reading below or significantly below grade level.
Current Program: While we are placing a heavy emphasis on reading practice, students are still struggling. East Palo Alto Charter School and East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy are being as innovative as possible to address the problem and are conducting literacy intervention trainings through professional development with teachers.

Chris’s Story, 2nd Grade: When Chris came to kindergarten, he didn't recognize his own name. His speech had been delayed, and he struggled with basic vocabulary like colors and animals. He could not keep up as the rest of the class learned sight words and letters, and by the end of kindergarten he was multiple reading levels behind. In this new environment though, he caught the germ of self-reliance and held himself accountable each day at school to read as much as he could. His first grade teacher, Ms. Brown, worked with him one-on-one and in small group settings through guided reading and reading conferences. She also began to implement Reader's Workshop, an instructional practice that gives students access to texts at their level and fosters their independence as readers.
Chris is now in second grade. His teacher recently showed a piece of his writing to Ms. Brown, which was about "growing his brain" and in which he said that the most important way to grow your brain is to read all different kinds of books. “Seeing his writing made me think of that 5-year-old that walked in my door just a couple of years ago and how amazingly far he has come. He became one of the most hard working students I have ever encountered.”—Ms. Brown, 1st Grade Teacher
